High School Bridge Program

Building Foundations Before Formal High School

The High School Bridge Program at Heritage Academy is designed for students of high school age who are not yet ready for traditional high school coursework—academically, developmentally, or emotionally.

This program exists to prevent students from being pushed into environments where they are set up to fail.

Who the Bridge Program is For

The High School Bridge Program is a strong fit for students who:

  • Are chronologically high school–aged

  • Have gaps in foundational skills (writing, math, organization)

  • Struggle with academic stamina or independence

  • Are anxious, discouraged, or burned out by school

  • Need time to rebuild confidence and competence

  • Are not yet ready for credit-bearing high school work

This is not a remedial track or a special education program, but a restorative and preparatory phase.

What the Bridge Program Focuses On

The Bridge Program prioritizes:

Foundational Academics

  • Clear sentence and paragraph writing

  • Reading comprehension and discussion

  • Mathematical reasoning and number sense

Executive Function & Independence

  • Time management and task completion

  • Sustained attention and effort

  • Responsibility and follow-through

Communication & Thinking

  • Expressing ideas clearly in speech and writing

  • Participating in discussion and projects

  • Building confidence as a learner

Meaningful Work

  • Project-based learning

  • Real-world tasks and contribution

  • Farm-based responsibilities appropriate for age

Students who are placed in the Bridge Program may work in mixed age groups for Skills Workshops during the school day, but then move to Bridge Projects where they work with other similar age students to design, create, and implement meaningful projects using foundational skills learned during skills workshops.

Bridge Projects are designed to provide opportunities for entrepreneurship, Socratic discussion, time management, as well as other valuable personal, relational, and educational skills within similar age peer groups.

What the Bridge  Program is NOT

The High School Bridge Program is not:

  • Traditional high school

  • Credit-bearing coursework

  • A diploma program

  • A substitute for therapeutic or clinical support

  • A special-education program for students with severe disabilities

Its purpose is preparation, not acceleration, and is meant to work in conjunction with home education.

Transitioning Out of the Bridge Program

Students may remain in the Bridge Program until they are ready to:

  • Transition into high school–level homeschool coursework

  • Enroll in online or community-based classes

  • Move into another educational setting better aligned with their next stage

We work with families to communicate honestly about readiness and next steps.

Our Bridge model allows students to grow at a pace that honors who they are—while preparing them for what comes next.

A Note to Parents Who Are Wondering...

“Will my child be held back?”

No. We don’t view learning as something you move “back” or “forward” from. We place students where they can build strength and confidence, so progress is real and sustainable.

“Will my child feel labeled or singled out?”

No. Grouping is done thoughtfully and discreetly. Students are never identified by level or track, and mixed-age learning helps normalize different strengths and growth rates.

“Will this limit my child’s future options?”

On the contrary. Strengthening foundations now often opens more doors later. Students who gain confidence, independence, and core skills are better prepared for whatever path comes next.

“What if my child grows quickly?”

Groupings are flexible. As students develop skills and readiness, placement can change. We revisit grouping intentionally, not rigidly.

“What if my child is capable but discouraged?”

Many capable children arrive discouraged after difficult school experiences. Our goal is to restore confidence first, so deeper learning can follow.

Every child’s path looks different. We believe that when learning feels safe and honest, growth follows.
